Social Commotion: Meta’s New Advertising Features & More

Welcome to the latest edition of Social Commotion, Motion’s roundup of social media updates and news. Check out our top social media updates from October 2026.

Meta Offers Enhanced Campaign Exposure

Meta announced several new advertising features at its Brand Building Summit on October 15, including Ads Super Burst, which allows brands to maximize awareness during key moments. Advertisers can book a 3- to 24-hour window for high-impact exposure at TV-like scale, with category exclusivity available. Although this premium option comes at a higher cost, it could benefit brands promoting product launches, major events or seasonal campaigns.

Meta is also testing First Impression Ads in the U.S., which place an advertiser’s promotion as the first ad users see when opening their Feed. The test is currently limited to one brand per day, offering premium visibility. Additionally, Meta is expanding Reels Trending Ads, allowing brands to appear alongside popular Reels content. The offering now includes 15 standard topics, with new categories such as Home & Garden, Spanish-language content and seasonal themes, alongside expanded targeting capabilities.

Finally, Meta is testing Aggregated View Time, a measurement tool that tracks cumulative exposure to video ads over a selected period. Rather than focusing solely on individual impressions, this feature aims to show how repeated or extended video exposure may influence consumer behavior and purchase intent. Together, these updates reflect Meta’s continued investment in premium ad placements, targeted brand awareness and more comprehensive video performance measurement.

AI Favors Brands with Active Social Media Presence

A new study by SE Ranking analyzed 100,000 keywords to understand how often social media content appears in Google search results and AI chatbot responses. Social media links appeared in 67.66% of Google AI Overviews, 32.39% of Google AI Mode responses and 8.4% of ChatGPT answers. These findings suggest that maintaining an active social media presence can help brands increase visibility as consumers increasingly turn to AI tools for information.

The platforms most frequently cited vary by AI tool. YouTube is the leading social source in Google AI Overviews, while Reddit and LinkedIn are among the top social platforms cited by ChatGPT. In Google AI Mode, social media sources appeared in 39.34% of branded search responses and 48.58% of non-branded responses, with Facebook, YouTube and Reddit appearing most often. However, citations can fluctuate significantly, as demonstrated by a reported sharp decline in Reddit citations within ChatGPT, highlighting the unpredictability of AI search behavior.

Overall, the findings reinforce the value of social media as part of a brand’s broader visibility strategy. Although an active social presence can help brands appear in AI-generated answers, there is no universal approach to optimizing for every platform. Brands should consider how different AI tools source information and maintain a consistent, relevant presence across social channels to strengthen their chances of being discovered.

TikTok is preparing for the holiday shopping season with new insights showing increased interest in gift discovery ahead of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In September, #holidayshopping content rose 263% month over month, and TikTok reported that users are 2.5 times more likely to purchase a luxury gift during the shopping period. Trending categories include gold jewelry, opal rings, collectibles, gaming products, Christmas pajamas and fall nail inspiration. TikTok also noted strong growth in womenswear, which accounted for one-third of fashion category sales on TikTok Shop so far this year.

TikTok Shop continues to see significant sales growth, surpassing $500 million in sales between Black Friday and Cyber Monday in 2025. Live shopping is also gaining momentum, with TikTok reporting that LIVE Shopping sales more than doubled year over year in the first half of 2026. Across 2025, LIVE sales increased 84%, supported by more than 760,000 live sessions and 1.6 billion views. These trends highlight the role of creator-led content, live demonstrations and product discovery in helping shoppers find and purchase gifts.

To further strengthen its shopping experience, TikTok has partnered with Happy Returns, allowing customers to return eligible purchases at approximately 10,000 Return Bar locations across the U.S. and receive instant refunds. The partnership is designed to simplify returns for shoppers while reducing the logistical burden on sellers. For marketers, these developments underscore opportunities to use trend-driven content, creator partnerships and LIVE Shopping to engage holiday shoppers, inspire purchases and drive seasonal sales.
