How Social Platforms Actually Measure Video Views

YouTube’s recent changes to how it counts video views highlight that a “view” doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing across platforms—or even within the same platform. YouTube now distinguishes between basic views, engaged views and qualified views, each reflecting different levels of viewer interaction and watch behavior.

For brands and marketers, this means view counts alone may not accurately represent engagement or audience interest. A high view count can be influenced by how a platform defines and measures a view, so marketers should consider the context behind the metric and look at additional performance indicators when evaluating content.

This is especially important when negotiating influencer partnerships and sponsored content. Creators may see an increase in reported views following YouTube’s methodology update, but that growth may not necessarily reflect a true increase in audience engagement. Brands should therefore evaluate views alongside metrics like watch time, engagement and other indicators of meaningful audience interaction.

Instagram Shares Tips on Video Creation

Instagram shared a five-step workflow focused on creating more engaging video content:

  1. Start with a strong hook. The first few seconds are crucial for stopping the scroll. Use a bold statement, surprising visual or compelling question, and monitor skip rates to see what works.
  1. Edit to the rhythm. Sync cuts and transitions with the audio’s beat and energy. Trending sounds can also help maximize engagement.
  1. Use text and visuals strategically. On-screen text, graphics and effects should reinforce the message, especially for viewers watching without sound, without making the content feel cluttered.
  1. Use data to improve. Review Insights to understand where viewers drop off and which content drives saves, shares and engagement—and then use these learnings to inform future videos.
  1. Keep the workflow efficient. Use tools like templates, Inspiration and beat markers to speed up the editing process and make content creation more streamlined.

Key takeaway: Effective Reels combine a strong hook, intentional editing, clear visuals and data-driven optimization.

Edits Gets Improved Project Management and AI Features

Meta continues to expand its Edits video editing app with updates designed to make content creation easier and more efficient. The latest update improves project organization by allowing users to long-press and reorder folders to make it easier to prioritize and manage multiple video concepts.

For U.S. users, Edits now includes an AI-powered feature that can turn still images into animated video clips based on conversational prompts. Users can describe the action they want to see, and Meta’s AI will animate the image accordingly. Creators can also bookmark favorite text and caption styles for easy reuse to help maintain visual consistency across projects.

Additional updates include bilingual caption options, improved text display tools and the ability to search for audio based on moods or interests like “chill,” “fashion,” or “travel.” Edits is also adding support for creating multiple versions of a project and building more advanced templates with overlays and locked clips, giving creators greater flexibility and control over their video content.
